Combined Pharmacy Residency Program

The Combined Forces Pharmacy Residency PGY-1 is a twelve-month hospital based post-graduate training program conducted at SAMMC, Fort Sam Houston, Texas and WHASC, Lackland AFB, Texas. The residency is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

The residency is designed to promote an educational climate which facilitates the development of skills both as a clinical pharmacist as well as a military officer. Areas of focus include but are limited to pharmacokinetics, internal medicine, ambulatory care, drug information, infectious disease, psychiatry, nuclear medicine, critical care, hematology/oncology, bone marrow transplant, pharmacoeconomics, research design and administration/distribution.

Residents are encouraged to examine and challenge existing ideas and to develop new concepts within the practice site. Utilization and application of these innovations should be reflected in clinical practice and effective professional relationships. They are responsible for acquisition of increased knowledge in pathophysiology of disease states, clinical laboratory data, pharmacotherapy, drug information, pharmacoeconomics, and research design/protocol development.

Upon completion of the residency the individual will have gained the necessary clinical and managerial skills to function as a clinical pharmacist, preceptor or chief of pharmacy within the military healthcare system.

*PGY-2 residencies in Nuclear Pharmacy and Hematology / Oncology are currently available at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, 6900 Georgia Avenue Northwest, Washington, DC 20307-0003.
