Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program

The San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC) orthopedic surgery residency at San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC) is a fully accredited residency program with a total resident complement of seven. There are four spots each year for Army applicants and three spots each year for Air Force applicants.

The residency is part of a 279-person multi-disciplinary department that includes the state of the art Center for the Intrepid amputee rehabilitation facility, and the Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgery Center (WHASC) along with physical therapy, occupational therapy, physical medicine and other services. The scope of our department facilitates many unique opportunities that are not afforded to residents at other facilities and allows for residents to find their passion within orthopedics. We have 22 active faculty representing all orthopedic subspecialties, including: Sports Medicine, Musculoskeletal Pathology, Orthopedic Trauma, Hand Surgery, Spine Surgery, Pediatric Orthopedics, Foot and Ankle Surgery, and Joint Replacement Surgery. All subspecialty teams have at least two fellowship trained surgeons directing the curriculum providing an unmatched breadth of experience in military residencies.

Over 4000 orthopedic cases are performed each year at SAMMC and WHASC, with hundreds more procedures performed at our outside rotations performed in Denver, CO, Ft. Hood, TX, the US Air Force Academy and San Diego, CA. We receive 50% of the civilian trauma in San Antonio and are the only military orthopedic residency with a level 1 trauma center caring for over 2000 trauma admissions annually. Between our civilian and military patients we see a wide variety of conditions for all orthopedic subspecialties.

Academically, our residency scores within the top 20% of programs nationwide on the yearly in-training examination with some residents routinely scoring in the top 95th percentile. SAMMC Orthopedics had 25 peer-reviewed publications into orthopedic journals in the last year alone, along with four grants currently funded, and 10 prospective research trials enrolling patients and with over 50 retrospective research studies ongoing. In addition, our residency has a strong history of leadership involvement within organizations such as the American Academy of orthopedic Surgeons, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, as well as other regional and specialty societies such as the Mid America orthopedic Association, and Society of Military orthopedic Surgeons. Current faculty lecture nationally and are involved with not only military orthopedics but also leadership position within their respective subspecialties.

In order to remain a premier orthopedic residency we want to select the very best residents. We welcome anyone interested in training at the forefront of orthopedics to contact us at 210-916-3410/1284 to set up a rotation or an interview.
