Internal Medicine Residency Application

Internship: 4th year medical students with a US military obligation (HPSP, ROTC, or USUHS) may apply. Criteria for selection include academic performance during medical school, USMLE or COMLEX scores, letters of recommendation, demonstrated interest in military service, leadership potential, and performance during active duty tours while in medical school.

The application for Army students is a two step process that consists of submitting an application through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) as well as submitting a supplementary application to the US Army Medical Education Directorate. The Army utilizes a computer match similar to the National Residency Matching Program. The results of the match are finalized at the Joint Service Selection Board, held in December of each year. Results are typically released in mid-December.

Air Force students can apply by submitting an application through the Air Force Physician Education Branch. The Air Force does not utilize a computer match, instead applications are reviewed independently at the Joint Service Selection Board in December of each year and released later in the month.

Residency: Active duty medical corps officers of the Army or Air Force who have completed a year of internship are eligible to apply for a limited number of PGY2 positions. Select civilian physicians who meet qualifications and are willing to serve on Active Duty in the US Army or Air Force are also able to apply. Selection to PGY2 and 3 positions is done via the Joint Service Selection Board.
