Emergency Medicine Residency Program
Welcome to the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC) Emergency Medicine Residency Program. This program is one of the nation’s oldest and largest emergency medicine residency training programs. The program began in 1977 at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), and in 1987 became a joint program with Air Force program at Wilford Hall Air Force Medical Center (WHMC). In January 2012, the BRAC commission merged BAMC and WHMC Emergency Departments which resulted in a renaming of the hospital to the San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC). Below are some important aspects about the program.
- Exceptional 99% ABEM board exam pass rate over the last 10 years
- SAMMC ED is a brand new consolidated Army-Air Force facility
- Core ED rotations solely at SAMMC with no additional rotations at Wilford Hall
- Community rotations in New Braunfels, Houston, San Antonio, Austin
- Toxicology rotation in New York City at Bellevue Hospital
- Ample research opportunities in a variety of topics ($2.5 million dollars in grants)
- Rotation through the SAMMC Burn Unit, a leading center for burns in the country
- Extensive alumni network both currently serving or having served the Armed Forces
- EMPA fellowship (one of 3 in the nation) allows interaction with PAs in training
- Two EM fellowships; Emergency Ultrasound and Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
- Special Forces Medic training program works in conjunction with the resident program
- One of two level 1 trauma centers in the nation’s 7th largest city seeing over 70K patient visits per year
Medical Students: Our program rotates hundreds of students each year with the goal of developing well rounded physicians for years to come as well as enhancing the residents’ opportunities to teach and lead patient care. Below are some important aspects of the student rotation.
- 4 weeks of integrated patient care activities; students work side by side with the residents and attendings in a busy ED
- Dedicated procedure lab, Emergency ultrasound and SIM education to allow for hands-on training
- Lecture series to cover the essentials of Emergency Medicine and provide a study basis for the shelf exam
- Social gatherings with the residents, staff, and students to allow for interaction outside of the work environment
