OB/GYN Residency Program

The goal of the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC) Integrated Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Training Program is to produce graduates who possess the knowledge, technical skills, and attitudes required to function as fully qualified obstetricians and gynecologists. Graduates will be able to provide primary health care to women and specialty care required to deal with the full range of conditions encountered in the practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Residents in our program provide services for almost 60,000 women between their work at SAMMC and of site rotations at Carl R Darnell Army Medical Center (Ft Hood, TX).

The program is designed to meet or exceed all of the general and special requirements for resident education outlined in the AMA Directory of Graduate Medical Education Programs. Residents are exposed to the full spectrum of OB/GYN care including benign gynecology, labor and delivery, high risk obstetrics, gynecology oncology, female pelvic and reconstructive surgery, and reproductive endocrinology and infertility. The SAMMC training platform also presents a unique experience for our residents with exposure to the only Level 1 Trauma and Burn Unit in DOD. This provides interesting and challenging Gynecology and OB consults and learning opportunities. Residents progress through a structured educational system from total supervision to independent function and are given an opportunity to acquire along the way the cognitive knowledge, technical skills, judgment, and compassionate approach to patient care necessary to practice in this challenging field. Successful completion of the program qualifies the graduate for Part One of the specialty board examination. In addition to our clinical training we also emphasize research with both a didactic research curriculum as well as resident research requirements supported by our department faculty. This serves to stimulate a group of individuals who may pursue additional subspecialty training and/or seek career opportunities in academic medicine. The outstanding work of our training program was recently recognized by the RRC with top accreditation with the next site visit for the program occurring in 2021.
