The Ophthalmology Service maintains a large outpatient examination and treatment facility. Inpatients are unusual because the vast majority of surgical procedures are performed utilizing the same day surgery unit. The Outpatient Clinic serves both the local area by providing routine eye exams and a large referral area by providing more unusual eye pathology. Medical Students rotating through the Ophthalmology Service will work closely with the first year residents, and will complete their rotation possessing detailed knowledge on how a complete examination of the eye as well as recognition of the more common ocular disorders and disease. The experience will allow the student either to use the skills obtained in this chosen specialty or to decide whether further training in ophthalmology would be desired.
