Neonatology Fellowship Application

Due to military downsizing, only 4th year medical student graduates with a U.S. military obligation (HPSP, USUHS, ROTC) may apply to the Army First Year of Graduate Medical Education (FYGME). Applicants are required to apply through the Medical Education FYGME Branch, Falls Church VA, in addition to applying to the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS), developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).

Criteria for Selection

Criteria for selection include academic performance in medical school, USMLE scores, letters of recommendation, demonstrated interest in military service, leadership potential, physical, mental and moral fitness.

Research

Wilford Hall and Brooke Army Medical Centers have large clinical investigation facilities. Full complements of laboratory space (including hyperbaric chambers), personnel, equipment, veterinary services, statistical services and research design support are available. The Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research campus is located 5 miles from WHMC. This facility houses the largest primate research colony in the US. A complete, full time 3-bed NICU operates at this facility under supervision of our neonatal staff. NIH grants primarily focused on neonatal lung development and disease support scores of projects with our neonatal fellows and staff participation. UTSHC-SA has a vast array of clinical and basic science research efforts available to our fellows. Fellow and staff research areas include disease and developmental studies in pulmonology, nitric oxide, cell biology, immunology, hematology a epidemiology among others.

Fellowship

Eligibility -- Active duty Medical Corps (MC) officers who are U.S. citizens and a graduate of an accredited U.S. school of medicine. Any MC active duty officer, who is a graduate from a foreign medical school, must possess a standard certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
