Infectious Disease Fellowship Program
The goal of this program is to effectively train internal medicine physicians in the clinical and academic subspecialty of Infectious Diseases. Upon completing the fellowship, physicians will be able to take and pass the ABIM subspecialty board in Infectious Diseases, as well as to function as an ID subspecialist in a primary care ID, consultant, military ID, or research environment
Structure of the Fellowship Program Two Army fellows per year are accepted for training into the SAUSHEC ID program (two Air Force fellows per year are also selected).
Education
Fellows are based at BAMC. The ID program for Army fellows is a 3-year course, which includes > 13 academic months (12 calendar months) of direct clinical care of patients with ID diagnoses, problems, or questions. The first two years are generally divided into clinical rotations (1 month each) and research blocks of variable duration. Usually, most of the required 12 clinical calendar months are performed during the first 2 years, and the third year is designed for more intense research time and effort. Most fellows serve 24 months of clinical time during this year at their discretion, often satisfying their interest in very specialized fields
