Emergency Medicine Service Fellowship Program
EMS is a professional niche within the subspecialty of emergency medicine. EMS fellowship training adds additional knowledge and skills that enable physicians to proficiently conduct all aspects of EMS medical direction including treatment of clinical problems; management of the EMS system as a community health resource; medical direction of and quality improvement for medical priority dispatchers; performance of EMS research; education of the public and EMS system personnel; supervision of EMS personnel delivering medical care; public health and disaster initiatives; and provision of medical leadership for both the combat and civilian setting. In addition, fellowship training allows focused opportunity and understanding of the research agenda as it applies to the continuity spectrum of illness or injury from home/field to inpatient care. One Army fellow will be selected every year with the hopes of possible tri-service expansion once Fort Sam Houston becomes the future pre hospital training center for all tri-service medics.
Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) is affiliated with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) and Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center through a variety of GME programs as part of the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC) and serves as a center for higher education, patient care and research focusing on military health sciences. BAMC is also one of ten academic institutions in San Antonio which is active in the Southwest Research Consortium as well as the Trauma Institute of San Antonio Texas (TRISAT). TRISAT is the first congressionally funded, joint military-civilian trauma institute in the United States. TRISAT coordinates academic, community and military resources to most effectively serve trauma victims and their families. TRISAT member centers see 8,000 trauma patients per year from a 22-county trauma service area and beyond. TRISAT manages a consolidated electronic database of the region's hospital trauma registries and 70 EMS agencies throughout the trauma service area, resulting in greater opportunities for clinical research and injury prevention.
The Department of Emergency Medicine at BAMC oversees and is involved in a number of EMS activities:
- Direction of the largest pre hospital education program in the country at the Department of Combat Medic Training (91W)
- Participation in Mass Casualty Incident planning and execution
- Physician supervisory support for local EMS agencies
- Participate in local, state and national EMS committees and organizations
- Publish, review and edit peer reviewed EMS manuscripts, chapters and textbooks
