Clinical Research Fellowship Program

The Clinical Research Fellowship is a formal training program within the Army Medical Department that teaches the development and conduct of clinical research. The fellowship is two years in duration, with up to two fellows accepted each year. Funding is available for fellows to include educational fees, TDY, and specific research funding up to $15,000. Upon completing program requirements, fellows receive a Master of Science degree in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) from the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio (UTHSCSA).

This program provides unique skills required to effectively manage clinical investigation programs and research oversight in medical treatment facilities throughout the DoD. Specialty training in clinical research will qualify fellowship graduates for future leadership positions within this field (Chief, Department of Clinical Investigation), management positions in conducting clinical trials, or for research and management positions within the Army Medial Research and Materiel Command (MRMC).

The Clinical Research Fellowship also includes developing, obtaining approval, and executing a clinical research project. The clinical research project is expected to be completed prior to the end of fellowship (2 years). A clinical research mentor is assigned to oversee the project.

The Clinical Research Fellow also has clinical care duties according to the specialty area in which the fellow has been previously trained.
