San Antonio Military Health System
Army and Air Force Chiefs of Staff recently signed an agreement that paves the way for the future of military healthcare in the greater San Antonio area.
Spurred by the BRAC realignment of inpatient services from Wilford Hall to Brooke Army Medical Center, the agreement establishes the San Antonio Military Health System, or SAMHS, which will activate in September 2011. Air Force and Army General Officers will provide oversight of the healthcare provided by Brooke Army Medical Center, at Fort Sam Houston, and the 59th Medical Wing, based at Lackland Air Force Base.
The hospital currently known as Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) will be renamed the San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC) and will provide inpatient tertiary care as well as all trauma and emergency medical care. BAMC will become the Army organization providing governance to SAMMC and other Army clinics in San Antonio; such as The Fort Sam Houston Primary Care Clinic, Taylor Burk Clinic at Camp Bullis, and, coming soon, the Schertz Community Based Primary Care Clinic.
The 59th Medical Wing will remain an Air Force organization providing governance to the renamed Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center and other Air Force clinics in San Antonio; such as the Kelly Clinic, Randolph Clinic, and the North Central Federal Clinic.
The two independently governed and operated military treatment facilities, SAMMC and WHASC, will continue to be commanded by an Army and Air Force general officer, respectively. Both facilities will be staffed with Army and Air Force personnel.
Although the detailed structure of SAMHS is yet to be determined, the organization will provide oversight and coordination among all San Antonio military treatment facilities for credentialing and certification of medical personnel, business planning, acquisition strategy, healthcare operations, resource management, information management, logistics, and manpower.
Look for more details as they become available on the future SAMHS website.
