General Information

The Fort Sam Houston Soldier and Family Assistance Center (SFAC) is a one-stop administrative resource center hosting 14 different services supporting Warriors in Transition, their Family members and Surviving Spouses. Injured Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, and Airmen are transported to Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX for treatment. Fort Sam Houston includes Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) which is one of the world’s premier medical treatment centers. This Level 1 Trauma Center specializes in treatment of burns and amputations. With this world class burn center and the Center for the Intrepid seriously Wounded Warriors receive the finest treatment and recuperation programs. The SFAC provides these Warriors and their Family member’s extensive assistance on their road back to duty or in their transition back to their civilian community. These services include but are not limited to:

Information, Referral and Follow-Up (IR&F)

Provide reception services and a general orientation on the services available. Conduct initial intake and make referrals, and maintain resource listings on services provided in local community.

Military Personnel Services (HR)

Provides supportive actions concerning Retirement, Transition Management, Military Benefits, and Review of Records. Provide ID Card and CAC Card for Warriors in Transition.

Outreach Services

Coordinate and provide education and training on services, provide Community Outreach Services and Referrals based on the needs of member and perform referral services (EFMP, Respite Care, other special needs, etc.).

Defense Finance & Accounting Service (DFAS)

Provides a full range of services concerning Military Pay, Travel Pay Issues, and Family Member Travel actions.

Social Services Assistance

Provides comprehensive prevention education, intervention, information and referral assistance for social services (substance abuse, suicide prevention, stress and anger management, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Army Career and Alumni Program (ACAP)

Provide mandatory pre-separation counseling, assist in completing Pre-separation Counseling Checklist, and provide one on one transition and employment counseling.

Army Continuing Education System (ACES)

Provide education counseling services, Basic Skills Improvement, testing services when available (CLEP, DANTES and AFCT), VA Education Benefits counseling, evaluation of military experience for college credit, and GoArmyEd portal procedures for Army Tuition Assistance.

Staff Judge Advocate (SJA)/Paralegal

Information on the Medical Evaluation Board (MEB)/Physical Evaluation Board (PEB) process, procedures and assistance. Provide legal assistance services (Powers of Attorney, Traumatic Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance Program, Notary Services, Wills and Estates, and claims processing).

Child, Youth & School Services (CYSS)

Provide all registration services for Child, Youth & School Services programs including Sports and Family Child Care (FCC) homes. Manage all Warriors in Transition child care issues.

Financial Services

Provide Prevention and Education Classes, Credit Management, Budget Development, Consumer Information and Awareness, Financial Counseling and Assistance, Emergency financial assistance in the form of a loan or grant, and monetary assistance for undergraduate education of dependent children.

Office of Personnel Management (OPM)

Assists in the successful transition to civilian life, provides Federal Employment Assistance in the form of Federal Career Exploration, Resume Classes/Assistance, Application for Veterans Preference, Career Fairs, and Federal Agency Liaison Assistance.

Social Security Administration (SSA)

Provide one-on-one personalized service in the preparation of documents for active duty soldiers to file for disability benefits as a result of a physical and/or mental disability.

Veterans Affairs Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor (VRE)

Provide counseling to service members and Veterans and their eligible dependents on Chapter 31, Vocational Rehabilitation services to include interest, aptitude and ability testing for suitable employment goals and labor market research. Also provide information regarding Chapter 30, Montgomery GI Bill, and Chapter 33, Post 9/11 GI Bill and other chapters as well as education grants and community services.

Veterans Affairs Military Service Coordinator (MSC)

Provide VA benefits counseling to severely injured and ill Service members and/or their families and establish eligibility for early benefits to include automobile and housing grants if applicable; provide assistance to Servicemembers being processed through the Integrated Disability Evaluation System (IDES) Program on their rights, benefits, and obligations; conduct comprehensive discharge briefings on the full range of benefits available to veterans; independently examine, analyze, and evaluate initial and subsequent claims from the Physical Evaluation Board Liaison Officer (PEBLO) to ensure it is a valid and complete referral to determine whether sufficient evidence is on record to prepare a rating decision.

Inter-Net Café

Operation Comfort in conjunction with Cisco Systems and Time Warner provide free long distance telephone service and computer access for Warriors and Family members.
