Bariatric surgery is designed to treat obesity. There are three kinds of laparoscopic bariatric surgeries performed at SAMMC: Adjustable Gastric band (Lap-Band®), Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y) and Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy.

If you are overweight and have obesity-related conditions such as Type II Diabetes, Hypertension (high blood pressure), Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Asthma, Hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), or other obesity-related conditions, then you may qualify for bariatric surgery.

Currently, the Bariatric clinic is undergoing a change in personnel. Due to these changes we are not currently accepting self-referrals. To be seen in the Bariatric Clinic please visit your PCM and request a Bariatric consult. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Bariatric Support Groups are offered at 1830 hrs on the first Thursday of every month at 3100 Marvin R. Wood, Fort Sam Houston. A second Support Group is also offered at 1100 hrs on the first Friday of every month at the Audie L. Murphy VA, 7400 Merton Minter, San Antonio Clinic 1G classroom. No appointments are necessary for the offerings listed above.
