Fulfillment of BRAC Deadline Celebrated at Luncheon
Sep 8, 2011
The San Antonio military medical community officially met its BRAC deadline on Sept. 6 with the opening of labor and delivery services at Brooke Army Medical
Center, said Army Col. Larry Crozier, acting co-director of the San Antonio Medical BRAC Integration Office (SAMBIO).
"We have met the BRAC law today," Crozier said during an employee luncheon Sept. 6 in the SAMBIO office.
The relocation of all inpatient medical services from the 59th Medical Wing at Wilford Hall Medical Center to BAMC was mandated by the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure recommendation No. 172, with a Sept. 15 deadline for completion.
On Sept. 15, the two local medical facilities will undergo name changes. The medical center currently known as BAMC will transition to San Antonio Military Medical Center, or SAMMC, and Wilford Hall Medical Center will change its name to Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center, or WHASC.
Crozier said Sept. 6 – more than a week before the federally mandated deadline for completion of the transition -- represented a historic milestone in local military healthcare.
"BRAC 172 was realized today, due to the efforts of the people in this room," Crozier said. "Thank you for what you’ve done on behalf of SAMMC."

New Birthing Center Opening
Aug 29, 2011
An all-new birthing center is scheduled to open Sept. 6 on BAMC's
fifth floor. Labor, delivery, post-partum and neonatal intensive care services will close at Wilford Hall Medical Center Aug. 29 and open
new permanent locations at BAMC as the final step toward meeting the BRAC deadline for locating all local military inpatient medical
BAMC. BAMC's fifth floor is being renovated to accommodate the new birthing center. The LDR and NICU will be housed on 5 North-East.
will be located on 5 West and 5 East.
To facilitate continuity of care, many patients with expected delivery dates between Aug. 29 and Sept. 21 are being referred to and cared for by network providers. All patients will continue to see their current OB provider until a civilian provider has been assigned, and they have a confirmed appointment scheduled with that provider. The normal referral process will be followed. For more information, call (800) 444-5445.
